“Tonight I have the honor of recognizing a local community organization that is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year”, said Freeholder Bobadilla.  “Quisqueyanos Unidos does incredible work throughout the City of Newark to promote and celebrate the culture, heritage, traditions, food, dance and music of the Dominican community, and every year on February 27th co-hosts a flag-raising at Newark City Hall to celebrate the Dominican Republic’s independence.”  He went on explain that the organization also does extraordinary charitable work year-round to aid Dominican and Latino individuals and families in need by raising funds, supplying food or providing shelter.  “Quisqueyanos Unidos has been a pillar of the community for two decades”, said Bobadilla.  “It has encouraged Dominican pride, and also made us all aware of the rich history of the Dominican Republic, its culture, and its beautiful people.”

“We would like to thank the Freeholders, and specifically Freeholder Rolando Bobadilla, for having this wonderful event for us,” said Janette Ravelo-Torres, the organization’s Founder and President.  “We represent a group of people who believe it is important for us, every year on February 27th, to lead and show our kids our culture, food, customs and our heroes, and to know about us.  During the rest of the year we stay together to also do charitable work in response to catastrophes.”  She concluded saying, “We cannot thank you enough for this beautiful honor.”

Quisqueyanos Unidos of Newark was founded to celebrate the independence of the Dominican Republic from French rule in 1844 under the leadership of Juan Pablo Duarte on the island of Hispaniola, and to promote Dominican culture, folkloric dancing, Dominican heroes, food and customs.  On February 27th on each of the last 20 years, Quisqueyanos Unidos of Newark has joined with the City of Newark to commemorate the Dominican Republic’s independence with a Flag Raising Ceremony at Newark City Hall.

Immigrants who have come to the United States from the Dominican Republic have advanced and prospered in their adopted home while maintaining strong ties with their native culture, heritage and traditions, including such notable Dominicans as the late fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz, and Seattle Mariners baseball star Robinson Cano, who grew up in Newark, to name a few.

Quisqueyanos Unidos of Newark, which is translated as “People of the Beautiful Land United”, has worked to promote unity and pride in Newark’s Dominican community, and to assist members of the community with their problems, no matter what they might be, and no matter what it might require, including the raising of funds and the collecting of food and clothing.  It has also recognized the selfless work of more than 200 individuals over the course of the last 20 years who have gone above and beyond to help their neighbors.

The organization is ably led by its Founder and President, Janette Ravelo-Torres, and by its entire Board of Directors, including: Oneida Vidal, Vice President; Amiris Perez Bonilla, Secretary General; Alba Idalina Familia, Treasurer; Juan Familia, Organization Director; Miguel Pena, Art and Culture Director; Luisa Aponte, Public Relations Director; Luciano Torres, Sergeant-At-Arms; Dr. Thomas Espinosa, Legal Advisor; Amiramis Perez, Vocal; Rafael Familia, Vocal; Milady Familia, Vocal; and Albania Espaillat Ramos.

Freeholder Rolando Bobadilla is currently serving his first 3-year as District 1 Freeholder, representing the residents of Newark’s North and East Wards, and parts of the West and Central Wards.
