ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS
HONOR EAST ORANGE CAMPUS H. S. GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM
2015 ESSEX COUNTY TOURNAMENT & NORTH 1 GROUP 4 SECTIONAL CHAMPS

(Newark, NJ) – Essex County Freeholder President Britnee Timberlake of East Orange paid a personal visit to East Orange Campus High School on Tuesday, June 16th, to honor the EOCHS Girls Basketball Team for winning the 2015 Super Essex Conference American Division, Essex County Tournament and North 1 Group 4 Sectional championships.  Timberlake presented the team members with Commendations from the Freeholder Board during a ceremony held in the school’s gymnasium, which was also attended by EOCHS Athletic Director Abdul Hassan, the team’s coaches, members of a girls youth basketball program, and Osner Charles, Interim Director of the Recreation Department, who represented East Orange Mayor Lester Taylor, III.

“I am so happy to be here in my hometown, and in this gym, to pay tribute to an outstanding group of ‘superwomen’”, said Freeholder President Timberlake, “because they made history about three months ago by winning the school’s first-ever Super Essex Conference American Division and Essex County Tournament championships, as well as the North 1 Group 4 sectional championship!”

Timberlake spoke about having been in the stands many times during the season when she commented, “Ladies, you really shook this gym to the rafters and thrilled the entire City of East Orange with your exciting play, as you rolled to victory and victory during your record-setting season.  Congratulations!”

Timberlake also encouraged the players to continue their record of accomplishment at the next level athletically, and even more importantly, “… in your school work, because no one can ever take your education away from you, and more than anything else, it is the key to your future.”

The team was also congratulated by Athletic Director Abdul Hassan, Coach Derrick Johnson, and Interim Recreation Department Director, Osner Charles, who attended the event to represent Mayor Lester Taylor.  Graduating senior Angel Osagie-Erese thanked Freeholder Timberlake for honoring the team and also thanked her teammates “…for a season I will never forget for the rest of my life.”

The Jaguars won the 2015 North 1 Group 4 Sectional Championship on March 10th, the school’s fourth, by defeating Fair Lawn H.S. (80-25), Morris Knolls H.S. (65-26), Montclair H.S. (28-26) and then Paterson Eastside H.S. (50-40).  They also won the school’s first-ever Essex County Tournament title by defeating Verona H.S. (72-23), Weequahic H.S. (90-34), University H.S. (57-15) and then Montclair H.S. (51-32) on February 26th.

The team also won the Super Essex Conference (SEC) American Division Championship for the first time in school history and finished its outstanding 2014-2015 season ranked as the #6 team in the State of New Jersey and the State’s #2 Group 4 team with a stellar overall record of 25-3. 

The team was further recognized through honors bestowed upon three individual players:  Kyiarah English was named to the All-State 3rd Team, the All-Group 4 1st Team and the All-Senior 3rd Team, was named the Super Essex Conference “Player of the Year”, and was also honored by the Men of Essex as the “Women’s Basketball Player of the Year”; NyAsia Franklin was named to the All-Group 4 2nd Team and was named the Essex County Athletic Directors Association “Karen Fucello Scholar Athlete”; and Angel Osagie-Erese was named an NJSIAA Scholar Athlete.

The team was comprised of the following members: Seniors Angel Osagie-Erese, Kyiarah English, NyAsia Franklin, Niydira Parrish, Dainyea Richards, Bianca Timmer and Bianca Warren-Lamby; Juniors Marvellous Osagie-Erese, Barbara Jackson, Jessica Woods and Sahara Crawford; Sophomore Hadiyah Hassan; and Freshmen Moriyah Jordan and Lauren Lewter.  They were coached by Head Coach Derrick Johnson and Assistant Coaches Jimmy Sheard, Trevor Phillips and Tamika Rutledge.

Freeholder President Britnee Timberlake is serving her first term as the Board’s District 3 Freeholder where she represents East Orange, Orange, South Orange and part of Newark’s West Ward.  She is the youngest member to serve on the Board and the only African-American woman to currently lead a freeholder board in New Jersey.
