ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS
HONOR THE STATE CHAMPION MONTCLAIR KIMBERLEY ACADEMY
GIRLS TENNIS & BOYS SOCCER TEAMS
AND WILLIAM L. WING, JR.
AS 2012 NEW JERSEY GIRLS TENNIS “COACH OF THE YEAR”

(Newark, NJ) – During its Wednesday, February 20, 2013, meeting at the Hall of Records, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Montclair Kimberley Academy Girls Tennis and Boys Soccer teams for winning the 2012 Non-Public B State Championship and 2012 NJSIAA Non-Public B State Championship, respectively.  The Head Coach of the Girls Tennis Team William L. Wing, Jr., who won the 2012 New Jersey Girls Tennis “Coach of the Year” was also honored.  The Board’s commendations were sponsored and presented to the teams and coach by District 5 Freeholder Brendan W. Gill of Montclair.

Freeholder Gill, a resident of Montclair, opened the program by commending the Montclair Kimberley Academy community and stated, “They are calling this the greatest fall sports season over-all arguably in the history of the school.”  He went on to say, “I really wanted to make sure that I did my small part to recognize both the student athletes and the parents who are here this evening, for everything they did to allow these young people to achieve all of their success.” He then introduced Alex Langbein, Assistant Coach to the Girls Tennis Team who accepted the commendation on behalf of Head Coach William L. Wing, Jr. who was unable to attend.

Head Coach William L. Wing, Jr., in addition to leading the Montclair Kimberley Academy Girls Tennis Team to the 2012 Non-Public B State Championship, some of his accomplishments include; he has been the Director of Tennis at the Clifton Racquet Club since 2002; he is the owner of Bill Wing’s Tennis Academy that operates in Clifton and Montclair; he holds high performance coach certifications from the U. S. Professional Tennis Association P-1 and the U. S. Tennis Association; he is a Special Olympics coach; and finally, he is an Advisory Staff Member with Wilson and Adidas.  Assistant Coach Alex Langbein, offered moving comments while accepting on Wing’s behalf, he stated, “I have known Bill since I was five years old, learning tennis from him as well.  But becoming a coach on his staff is pretty interesting how things have come full circle.”  He went on to say, “Bill is very proud of the girls on the team. They have built a guide program from the middle school up.”  Senior Julia Perlmutter, one of the team Captains spoke on behalf of her teammates and thanked the Freeholder and the board, she stated, “We are all really excited about the season and happy to be here.  Thank you.”

The Girls Tennis team won its state championship on Wednesday, October 17th, when it defeated Gill St. Bernards, 3-2, at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, New Jersey to win the 2012 Non-Public B State Championship.By capturing the 2012 Non-Public B State Championship, the Montclair Kimberley Academy Girls Tennis Team finished the season with an outstanding record of 17 match victories with only 8 losses, thereby winning the school’s 8th state championship, and first since 2006.   In state tournament play, the Montclair Kimberley Academy Girls Tennis team also defeated Saddle River Day School (5-0), Dwight Englewood School (3-2) and Newark Academy (3-2).

The team’s accomplishments were further recognized when team members Julia Perlmutter and Madison Rivlin were named to the 2nd Team All-Super Essex Conference and Danielle Charpentier received Honorable Mention.

The Montclair Kimberley Academy Girls Tennis Team was coached by Head Coach Bill Wing and Assistant Coach Val Azzoli and is comprised of the following members: Seniors Danielle Charpentier (Captain), Kira Farris (Captain), Caroline Lindholm and Julia Perlmutter (Captain); Juniors Savannah Fusaro and Heather Perkins; Sophomores Lauren Charpentier, Nikita Israni and Madison Rivlin; and Freshman Isabella Calandra.

The Montclair Kimberley Academy Boys Soccer Team, The Cougars, won the 2012 NJSIAA Non-Public B State Championship by defeating Gill St. Bernards School of Gladstone, (2-0) on November 26, 2012, at The College of New Jersey in Ewing.  They ended their 2012 State Championship Season with an outstanding overall record of 19 victories with only 2 losses and 1 draw.  This is the team’s second consecutive win and the program’s third overall.  During this season they also won their first-ever Super Essex Conference American Division Championship, and they are ranked by The Star-Ledger as the #4 team in New Jersey, the #2 Non-Public team in New Jersey, and the #2 team in Essex County!

During the presentation to the Montclair Kimberley Academy Boys Soccer Team, Freeholder Gill reminded the athletes that when you accomplish something in High School athletics, you may not realize it, but you also allow other people in your community to forge memories as well.  He went on to state, “Now that I am a father of a four year old who loves soccer and I took him to a few of your games this season;……you may not realize it, but other people will remember where they were when you accomplished what you did. So, it becomes a community accomplishment and I commend you all.”

Senior Associate Director of Athletics Patricia Sullivan thanked Freeholder Gill on behalf of Coach Jordan Raper for the Boys Soccer Team.  Senior Matt Lane also spoke on behalf of the team and thanked the Board for this recognition.

The 2012 Montclair Kimberley Academy Boys Soccer Team was coached by Head Coach Jordan Raper and Assistant Coach Matt Myers.  The team is comprised of the following members: Seniors Matt Lane, Nick Pai, Jon Legregin, Miles Hackett, Justin Gonsalves, Joel Battsek, David Reading, Will Cerf, Ed Ellison, Scott Hermo, Kieffer Hessler, Jesse Naar and Mark Phillips; Juniors Tom Fusco, Ryan Fennelly, Sam Eisen, Mauricio Toscano and David Kauffman; and Sophomores Ross Musicant, Malcolm Dixon, Wyatt Noble and Danny Nasti.
Both teams also received administrative support from Headmaster Thomas W. Nammack, Head of Upper School David C. Flocco and Athletic Director Todd C. Smith
