ON HER RETIREMENT AS MONTCLAIR’S DEPUTY MUNICIPAL CLERK

Longtime Township Employee Retired on February 28th

(Newark, NJ) – Carla Horowitz of Montclair, who recently retired as Montclair’s Deputy Municipal Clerk, was honored by the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders for her more than two decades of service to the Township during the Board’s Wednesday, June 19, 2013, meeting held at Montclair Town Hall.  The Board’s commendation was sponsored and presented by District 5 Freeholder Brendan W. Gill of Montclair.

“Tonight, I have the honor of recognizing a woman who is certainly no stranger to this building”, said Freeholder Gill, “and that is Carla Horowitz, who devoted two decades of her life to the Township of Montclair and its residents, and who retired from the Office of the Clerk earlier this year.”  He apologized for being unable to attend a recent ceremony hosted by Montclair Municipal Council in Horowitz’s honor and said he wanted to take advantage of this opportunity “on behalf of the Board, to recognize your service.”

Horowitz began her career with the Township in the Municipal Clerk’s Office where she served for twelve years, followed by five years in the Finance Department before she returned to the Clerk’s Office to serve as the Deputy Clerk for the final three years of her tenure.  During that time she distinguished herself in everything she did, including processing volumes of meeting minutes, issuing all alcoholic beverage licenses, and collecting required ethics forms.  She retired on February 28, 2013.
In addition to her career with the Township, Horowitz is a talented potter.  She studied at Peter’s Valley in Layton, New Jersey, and at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, and one of her pots was included in the publication of the Lark Series book, “500 Raku”.  In 1973, she established and operated a storefront shop/studio/school, “The Clay Cellar”, in the South End business district of Montclair, which was later relocated to Riker Hill Art Park in Livingston in 1991 where it continues to operate today.  She also co-founded the Doubletree Gallery of Fine Art and Contemporary Crafts.  She has worked as an instructor at the Montclair Adult School for many years, taught classes at the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts in Summit and continues to teach at the Riker Hill Studio as well as the new ceramic studio at the Montclair Art Museum.

Ms. Horowitz is a member of the Municipal Clerks’ Association, the Potters’ Guild of New Jersey and the Friends of Barnet, England, Montclair’s sister city.  In her spare time, she plans to spend more time teaching, “throwing pots”, traveling and with her husband, Milt, her daughter Denise and son-in-law Dan, and her granddaughter, Vanesa.

“Carla, on behalf of the Board, and particularly as a resident of this community”, said Gill, “I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you’ve done for everyone and for assisting me personally over the years, and wish the best of luck in your retirement.”

“I have to say that I really am enjoying my retirement”, said Horowitz, “but I did enjoy the more than 20 years I was here.”  She added, “Working for the town was a challenge but very rewarding… I loved it, I loved the people I worked with and the people I worked for.  This is a great community.”
