       ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS
        HONOR THE COLUMBIA H. S. GIRLS TRACK TEAM
    FOR WINNING THE 2012 GROUP IV INDOOR & OUTDOOR
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

                   

The 2012 Columbia H. S. (Newark, NJ) – During its Wednesday, June 20th, meeting held at Montclair Town Hall, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Columbia High School Girls Track Team, the Cougars, for having won both the 2012 Group 4 Indoor and Outdoor State Championships.  Freeholder Carol Clark of East Orange presented the Board’s Commendations to Head Coach Lisa Morgan, Assistant Coach Chuck Keegan, and team members Simone Brownlee, Sierra Bastien and Ambur Ballew, who were present to represent their teammates.

The Columbia High School Girls Winter Track Team, the Cougars, won the 2012 New Jersey Group IV Indoor Track State Championship on Saturday, February 18th, in Toms River, and the Spring Track Team won the 2012 New Jersey Group IV Outdoor Track State Championship on Saturday, June 2nd, in Old Bridge.

In winning its Indoor State Championship, the Columbia High School Girls Winter Track Team won its fifth consecutive Group IV, North Jersey, Section 2 Championship on February 12th, finishing ahead of its nearest competitor, Union High School, by the score of 71-61, when 10 different athletes scored points for the team in 7 of the 10 events.  The Winter Track Team then went on to win the Group IV State Championship, tying Franklin High School, 34-34, when 7 different athletes scored points for the team in 4 of the 10 events.  The team also won its ninth consecutive Essex County Relays Championship and finished second in the Essex County Individual Championships.

In winning its Outdoor State Championship, the Columbia High School Girls Spring Track Team first won its third consecutive Group IV North Jersey, Section 2 Championship on May 26th, finishing ahead of its nearest competitor, Franklin High School, by the score of 103-74, when 7 different athletes scored points for the team in 10 of the 16 events.  The Team then went on to win its third consecutive Group IV State Championship, finishing ahead of Southern Regional High School, its nearest competitor, by the score of 60-40.75,when 7 different athletes scored points for the team in 8 of the 16 events.  The Spring Track Team also won the Essex County Relays Championship for the fourth consecutive year (tying Newark Tech), finished second in the Essex County Individual Championships and won the Super Essex Conference Large School Championship for the third year in a row.

The Columbia High School Girls Track Team is comprised of the following members: Seniors Yoyinsolo Ibikunle (O), Whitney Jackson (I/O), Brittany Padmore (I/O) and Ayanna Smith (I/O); Juniors Ambur Ballew (I/O), Sierra Bastien (O), Simone Brownlee (I/O), Shanika Dessein (I/O), Kenya Gatson (I/O) and Kianna Winston (I/O); Sophomores Olivia Baker (I/O), Aigner Bobbitt (I/O), Ezerea Brassington (O), Imani Coleman (I/O), Maya Hinton (I/O), Kayla Richardson (I/O) and Raquel Williams (I/O); and Freshmen Alison Badin (I/O), Evelyn Besom (O), Traci-Marie Chandler (I/O), Dominique Hughey (O) and Leah Strahs (I/O).  The team was coached by Head Coach Lisa Morgan and Assistant Coaches Chuck Keegan, Bill Seaman, Duke Richmond and Nick Frimpong.
