       ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS
        HONOR THE NEWARK TECH GIRLS TRACK TEAM
    FOR WINNING THE 2012 GROUP 1 INDOOR & OUTDOOR
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS


The 2012 Newark Tech Girls Track Team was honored by the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders during its June 20th meeting held at Montclair Town Hall for having won both the 2012 Group 1 Indoor and Outdoor State Championships.  The Board’s Commendations were presented to the team by Freeholder Carol Clark (front row, far right) of East Orange.  Also pictured above are: (front row, left to right) Brionna Singleton, Gifty Amanwah, Sabratina Rojas, Iana Amsterdam, Natalia Hinton, Nichole Candelaria and Jazmine Howard; and (back row, left to right) Head Coach Eddie Greene, Athletic Director Daniel Harris, Essence Underwood, Jenyce Baytop and Throw Coach Nhemi Theodore.  (PHOTO BY GLEN FRIESON)

(Newark, NJ) – During its Wednesday, June 20th, meeting held at Montclair Town Hall, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Newark Tech Girls Track Team, the Terriers, for having won both the 2012 Group 1 Indoor and Outdoor State Championships.  Freeholder Carol Clark of East Orange presented the Board’s Commendations to the team, Coaches Eddie Greene and Nhemi Theodore, and Athletic Director Dan Harris.

The Newark Tech Girls Winter Track Team captured its Group 1 Indoor State Championship on Saturday, February 18th, in Toms River, and the Spring Track Team won the Group 1 Outdoor State Championship on Saturday, June 2nd, in Old Bridge.

In winning its second consecutive Indoor State Championship, the Newark Tech Girls Winter Track Team, competing in only its third year of existence, won its first-ever Group 1 North Jersey, Section 2 Championship on February 8th, finishing far ahead of its nearest competitor, Hanover Park High School, by the score of 119-60, when 10 different athletes scored points for the team in 7 of the 10 events.  The team then went on to win the Group 1 State Championship ahead of its nearest competitor, Haddonfield High School, by the score of 56-46, when 9 different athletes scored points for the team in 5 of the 10 events.  The team also won the North Jersey Championships at FDU, the Suffern Invitational Championship, its first-ever Essex County Track Championship, and enjoyed outstanding performances at the New Balance High School Track Nationals.

In winning its second consecutive Outdoor State Championship, the Newark Tech Girls Spring Track Team, also competing in only its third year of existence, first won its second consecutive Group 1 North Jersey, Section 2 Championship on May 26th, finishing far, far ahead of its nearest competitor, Weequahic High School, by the score of 189-72½, when 11 different athletes scored points for the team in 12 of the 16 events.  The team then went on to win the Group 1 State Championship, again far outdistancing Weequahic High School, its nearest competitor, by the score of 93-44 when 9 different athletes scored points for the team in 9 of the 16 events.  In addition to winning its second consecutive 2012 Outdoor State Championship, the Newark Tech Girls Spring Track Team enjoyed an undefeated season.  The team won the Kearny Relays, the Beach Run Invitational in South Carolina, the Morgan State Invitational in Maryland, the Big Blue Invitational in Newark, the Super Essex Conference Championship, the Essex County Relays (tying Columbia H.S.), and the Essex County Individual Championships.

The Newark Tech Girls Track Team is comprised of the following members: Seniors Nichole Candelaria, Natalie McAllister, Gifty Amankwah and Sabratina Rojas; Juniors Iana Amsterdam, Natalia Hinton and Essence Underwood; Sophomores Brionna Singleton, Jenyce Baytops, Stherline Silencieux and Jazmine Howard; and Freshman Ashley McKinley (Outdoor only).  The team was coached by Head Coach Eddie Greene, Throw Coach Nhemie Theodore, JV Coach Mecca Brown and Jump Coach Aaron Brown, with Parent Volunteers Laverne Amsterdam and Mary Ann McAllister.
