ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS
HONOR THE STATE CHAMPION MILLBURN HIGH SCHOOL
GIRLS TENNIS & BOYS SOCCER TEAMS

(Newark, NJ) – During its Wednesday, December 19, 2012, meeting at the Hall of Records, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored the Millburn High School Girls Tennis and Boys Soccer teams for winning their respective 2012 Group 4 State Championships.  The Board’s commendations were co-sponsored and presented to the teams by Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold of Livingston and Freeholder Leonard Luciano of West Caldwell.

Freeholder Sebold opened the program by saying, “It is really a great pleasure to be here tonight to recognize so many wonderful students from Millburn High School for their accomplishments.”  She then introduced Dr. Theodore D’Alessio, Millburn H. S. Director of Athletics, who thanked the Board for honoring the teams before adding, “I always say to my teams that champions come and go, but that champions with class are remembered forever.”  He went on to say, “I really feel strongly about these two teams because they handled themselves with humility and sportsmanship, and I think that speaks to their character as well as their ability and talents, and that makes us very proud at Millburn.”

The Millburn High School Girls Tennis Team won its first-ever Group 4 State Championship by defeating West Windsor Plainsboro South High School, 3-2, on October 17th, the program’s 7th consecutive group state championship and 18th title overall.

In state tournament play leading up to the championship match, the team first defeated East Orange High School (5-0), Scotch Plains High School (5-0) and Ridge High School (3.5-1.5), before defeating Westfield High School (3-2) to win the school’s first-ever North 2, Group 4 State Sectional Championship, which was also its 7th consecutive state sectional championship and 30th overall.  The team then went on to defeat Livingston High School, 3-2, in the Group 4 semifinals, before defeating West Windsor Plainsboro South High School for the championship, thereby earning the honor of competing in the 2012 Tournament of Champions where the team defeated the Group III State Champions, Mendham High School, 3-2, before falling just short against the #1-ranked team in the state, Haddonfield High School, 2-3, in the Tournament of Champions Final.

During its stellar championship season during which it compiled an outstanding record of 24-2, the Millburn High School Girls Tennis Team also finished second in the Essex County Tournament and won the Super Essex Conference American Division Championship for the 4th consecutive year.

The team was coached by Bill Wickenheisser and Lee Robinson, and is comprised of the following members: Seniors Molly Blevins, Patricia Chau (Captain), Lauren Cohen, Rebecca Mandel (Captain) and Lexie Tonelli; Juniors Stephanie Chen Schmidt, Caroline Levine, April Liu, Jia-Ling Tuan and Sandy Xie; Sophomores Jane Bary, Rebecca Blevins and Ingrid Waung; and Freshmen Elizabeth Gray and Anna Mandel.

Coach Wickenheisser thanked the Board for inviting the team back again, congratulated the boys’ soccer team, and thanked Dr. D’Alessio and Coach Robinson, who jokingly commented, “I’m just happy to be of use to somebody at this point in my life!”  Senior co-captains Lauren Cohen, Rebecca Mandel and Patricia Chau also spoke on behalf of the team.

During his presentation to the Boys Soccer Team, Freeholder Luciano congratulated the team for its accomplishments and said how proud he was to represent the Township of Millburn as the District 4 Freeholder because, “recently,
there have been so many state championship teams at Millburn High School”, adding, “and I hope Dr. D’Alessio will be back here with other teams many more times in the future.”

The Millburn High School Boys Soccer Team, the Millers, won the 2012 Group 4 State Championship by defeating Monroe Township H. S. (3-2) in a thrilling double overtime match on December 1st, and finished the season with an outstanding record of 21-3.

In state tournament play leading up to the championship game, the team first defeated Perth Amboy High School (7-1), Edison High School (7-0), Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School (2-2, 5-4 in Penalty Kicks) and then Westfield High School (2-0) to win the North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 Sectional Championship, before going on to defeat Montclair High School (2-1) in the Group 4 semifinal.

The team also captured the Essex County Championship for the 7th time in school history by defeating West Orange, 2-0, on October 20th, and finished the season ranked by The Star-Ledger as the #1 Group 4 team in New Jersey and the #1 team in Essex County.  The team was further recognized for its accomplishments by the naming of Rohan Sood (also named Essex County “Player of the Year”), Adam Altmark, Nick Politan and Marc Langendorff to All-State Honors.

The team was coached by Head Coach Jason Robinson and Assistant Coaches Michael Hogan and Frank Gontier, and is comprised of the following members: Seniors Tyler Alexander, Adam Altmark, Jared Darvin, Ben Flaum, Jack Goldberg, Spenser Heller, John Muller, Scott Myers, Nathan Nacheff, Nick Politan, Rohan Sood and Amir Taree; Juniors Sam Curtis, Ben Haymes, Steve Karp, Marc Langendorff, Josh Mata, Michael Sorin, Gideon Tamir and Lucas Weissman; and Sophomores Sebastien Deguines, Greg Rudman and Kirk Willens.

Coach Robinson applauded his players for their hard work, dedication, determination, “and most of all, their patience”, explaining that many of the team’s victories were secured at late in the games because “their confidence and patience enabled them to use the full time available to them to come out victorious.”  He also expressed his thanks to the players’ parents and reminded his players that their parents care deeply about them and that they should be sure their parents know how much they are appreciated.  Senior co-captains Nate Acheff and Jack Goldberg also spoke on behalf of the team.
