AT THE ESSEX COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

Essex County Executive DiVincenzo Invites Children and Families
to Expand their Understanding and Appreciation of the Environment

Essex County, NJ – A variety of programs are being offered at the Essex County Environmental Center during the month of August that will teach children and adults about nature and help them gain a greater appreciation and understanding of our environment. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites children and adults to visit the Environmental Center where they can enjoy an enriching recreational experience through nature and conservation activities.

“Our Environmental Center has become the premiere location for environmental education and nature appreciation. With the help of our partner groups, our dynamic schedule of events and activities will captivate all ages,” DiVincenzo said. “Walk in our woods, discover habitats, get pointers on gardening, learn about nature photography and much more. It’s all about nature and it’s all at our Environmental Center,” he added.

Events scheduled for August are as follows:

“Thursday Evening Yoga Series” is geared for adults. This all-levels yoga series will focus on alignment, flow and warmth followed by a restorative pose to unwind the body and mind for bed. Dress comfortably and bring your own mat. Cost is $10 for the July class. Advance registration and monthly payment is required. For information, call 973-228-8776. No refunds will be given for missed classes. Thursday Evening Yoga is scheduled as follows:

“Adult Wilderness Skills Camp” is for adults and children ages 16 and older. Mike Dennis of Traditional Earth Skills will lead a series of workshops about native Lenape life skills. Sessions will include a fire by friction workshop, canoeing the Passaic River, moccasin making and shelter building. This will be a fun, hands-on program for outdoor enthusiasts, scout leaders, or anyone looking to connect more with local history. Attend one class or all four. Cost is $25 per person per class or $90 for the series. Advance registration and payment is required. For information, call 973-228-8776. Adult Wilderness Skills Camp will be held as follows:

“Friday Morning Yoga” is geared for adults. This class will explore the many joys of yoga. Breathing synchronized with movement will warm the body and relax the mind. All levels are welcome. “Bike Right – Defensive Bike Skills Training” is for adults and children ages 14 and up. Would you like to improve your biking skills and learn how to share the road? TransOptions’ bike coaches will train bike riders and beginner bike riders to Bike Right! In a hands-on training course, bikers will learn skills such as traffic navigation, crash avoidance, NJ bike laws, route planning, flat tire repair, proper gearing and more. Participants will also be given a bike rider’s student manual as well as free Bike Right merchandise. For the Saturday session, please bring a helmet and a bike in good working order. “4-H Young Gardeners Club” is for children in grades 1 through 8. Have you ever wondered how vegetables and flowers grow? Where spaghetti sauce comes from? How you can find a rainbow in a garden? Come join the Young Gardener's 4-H Club to find the answers to these questions and more. Meet in Garibaldi Hall. Advance registration is required. “Meditation Series for Beginners” is geared for adults. Some of the many benefits of meditation are stress reduction, improved relationships and increased health. Each session will highlight a different meditation technique – visualization, sound and breath, give various hints and suggestions for establishing a regular practice and include some chair yoga postures. Learn the basics and see how meditation can increase your appreciation for nature around you as well as the nature within you. Cost is $9 per adult per class or $23 for the series. “Little Explorers Summer Stroll” is for young children ages 2 to 5. Children will go on a summer stroll through wooded wetland at the Environmental Center and take time to stop and explore the wonders of the season. The program will be held rain or shine. “Bike Right – Learn to Ride” is for children ages 5 and up. Make learning to ride a bike easier with TransOptions Bike Right Learn to Ride class. Bike Right Learn to Ride will teach children the safe, easy and effective way to learn to ride. Using this "balance first" method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping and steering a bike, as well as proper helmet fit and adjustment. Please bring a helmet and a bike in good working order. “Organically Prepare Your Lawn for Next Spring” is geared for adults. Rutgers Cooperative Extension staff will teach organic techniques for over-wintering your lawn so that it will be vibrant and healthy next spring. Prepare it now, enjoy it later. Information about the new State fertilizer law will also be presented and the regulations that apply to homeowners will be discussed. Meet in Garibaldi Hall. Cost is $9 per person. “Labor Day Live Raptor Program” is for ages 4 and up. Tenafly Nature Center presents live raptors! Participants will observe several live raptors up close and will learn about their behavior, physiology, adaptations, ecological importance and natural history. Hands-on artifacts and demonstrations will capture the imagination of young and old. Cost is $7 per child and $9 per adult. Advance registration and payment is required by Wednesday, August 21st. The deadline for submission for the2013 Essex County Parks Photography Contest” is Wednesday, September 18th. Anyone with a camera is invited and encouraged to submit photos that capture a part of your visit to the Essex County Park System. For rules and regulations, please contact the Essex County Environmental Center at 973-228-8776.

The Essex County Park System was created in 1895 and is the first county park system established in the United States. The Park System consists of more than 6,000 acres and has 22 parks, five reservations, an environmental center, a zoo, Treetop Adventure Course, ice skating rink, roller skating rink, three public golf courses, golf driving range, two miniature golf courses, three off-leash dog facilities, a castle and the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens.
