AND BIRDS AT THE ESSEX COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

Essex County Executive DiVincenzo Invites Children and Families
to Celebrate the Arrival of Autumn at the Fourth Annual Octoberfest

Roseland, NJ - A variety of programs are being offered at the Essex County Environmental Center during the month of October that will teach children and adults about nature and help them gain a greater appreciation and understanding of our environment. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. invites children and adults to visit the Environmental Center for the Fourth Annual Octoberfest, a day-long program on Saturday, October 4th that is filled with family-oriented events to celebrate the arrival of autumn.

"Our Environmental Center has become the premiere location for environmental education and nature appreciation. With the help of our partner groups, our dynamic schedule of events and activities will captivate all ages," DiVincenzo said. "Walk in our woods, discover habitats, get pointers on gardening, learn about nature photography and much more. It's all about nature and it's all at our Environmental Center," he added.

Events scheduled for October are as follows:

"Fourth Annual Octoberfest" is a day-long celebration hosted by the Essex County Environmental Center and its partner agencies to welcome the arrival of autumn. There will be a pumpkin patch, canoeing, hikes, arts & crafts, gardening tips, mosquito demonstrations and much more! Admission is free. Octoberfest will be held as follows:

"Birding Hike in Essex County Grover Cleveland Park" will be presented by the New Jersey Audubon Society. Meet by the pond in the park. This hike will be led at an easy pace by Dave Hall. Most of the trails are level and wide, and a few have steep trail sections and could be slightly muddy. Contact the Sherman-Hoffman Sanctuary at 908-766-5787 for hike details and to register. Fee is $6 for NJAS members and $8 for non-members. Birding Hike will be held as follows:

Caldwell/Essex Fells, NJ

"Birding Hike in Essex County West Essex Park and Hatfield Swamp" will be presented by the New Jersey Audubon Society. Meet at the parking lot of King's Grocery in West Caldwell. This hike will be led at an easy pace by Dave Hall. Depending on recent weather, you may want to wear boots. Contact the Sherman-Hoffman Sanctuary at 908-766-5787 for hike details and to register. Fee is $6 for NJAS members and $8 for non-members. Birding Hike will be held as follows:

Place: King's Grocery Parking Lot
Intersection of Bloomfield and Passaic Avenues
West Caldwell, NJ

"Global Population & Environment Program" will be hosted by the West Essex Park Conservancy and Sierra Club. Guest speaker Sandeep Bathala will discuss the Sierra Club's Global Population & Environment Program, which has conducted study tours to explore issues about sustainable development and the environment since 2003. Cost is $7 per adult and free for WEPC/Sierra Club members. Global Population and Environment Program will be held as follows:

"Apitherapy For Health" is sponsored by the Essex County Beekeepers Society. Tom Fuscaldo will speak about the use of bee venom to treat diseases such as arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Cost is $7 per adult and free for ECBS members. Apitherapy for Health will be held as follows:

"Bulb Planting Blitz" will be led by the Master Gardeners of Essex County. Join the Master Gardeners to learn how these plants grow, dissect a bulb and then help beautify the gardens by planting some bulbs. Cost is $5 per child, $7 per adult and $9 per family. Bulb Planting Blitz will be held as follows:

"Kaleidoscopes" will be presented by the New Jersey Woodturners Association. Jim Duxbury will demonstrate how to make these wonderful toys, which both children and adults enjoy. Cost is $7 per adult and free for NJWA members. Kaleidoscopes will be held as follows:

The Essex County Park System was created in 1895 and is the first county park system established in the United States. The Park System consists of more than 6,000 acres and has 18 parks, five reservations, an environmental center, a zoo, ice skating rink, roller skating rink, three public golf courses, golf driving range, three off-leash dog facilities and a castle.
