ESSEX COUNTY: Weequahic Park Golf Course

Weequahic Park Golf Course
Elizabeth and Grumman Avenue, Newark
Phone # 973-923-1838

Course Proflie

Weequahic Park Golf Course is set on a beautifully rolling property and new bunkers have been added to the course through our renovation efforts that have greatly enhanced its strategic and visual appeal. Tucked in the corner of Newark’s historic Weequahic Park, this is the oldest public course in New Jersey having been designed by Baltusrol Golf Club professional George Low in 1913.

While Weequahic measures slightly less than 6,000 yards, the course offers an ideal golfing landscape and its small greens make low scoring difficult.  Among the best holes on this lovely course are the uphill par five 3rd with two large bunkers carved into the hillside on this hole, as well as the long par four 16th that plays to the crest of this same hill and down to the green that is set in base of its long slope.

The First Tee of Essex County

Weequahic Park Golf Course is also home to The First Tee of Essex County, a youth development program that teaches children ages 7-17 positive values through the game of golf. This great program has a dedicated practice area for program participants adjacent to the golf course. For more information click on link below that will connect you to The First Tee of Essex County webpage:

Our Golf Course Improvement Master Plan has been completed with outstanding results at each our three courses at Weequahic Park, Hendricks Field and Francis Byrne.  This investment of over $7,000,000 addressed several key areas to improve course infrastructure that will lead to greater enjoyment and superior conditions for our residents and friends in the years to come.  New irrigation systems will provide more efficient and reliable water distribution, while drainage upgrades will prevent courses from being too wet to play after heavy rains.  Six major areas were addressed with this work:

Irrigation : Installation of modern automated irrigation systems that will provide more efficient distribution of water.

Drainage : Major problem areas were addressed with the installation of new pipe, numerous catch basins and drainage ditches.  This will promote better conditions and healthier turf.

Tees : Many new tees were built with proper construction methods that increased teeing area and provide more access points that will reduce wear.  Several new forward and back tees will also provide challenge and provide enjoyment to all levels of players.

Cart Paths : Many new cart paths were rebuilt or relocated for improved safety, aesthetics and routing.  Curbs were also installed around tees and greens as necessary to help to control traffic flow in these critical areas.

New Bunkers : Existing bunkers were rebuilt or restored, with many new ones built to improve the strategic interest of each of our courses.

Tree Work : Many trees were pruned, while others that prevented proper growing conditions and posed serious safety concerns were removed.

The completion of these renovations is just the beginning of this transformation for our golf facilities.  Improved maintenance practices and investments in new mowing equipment will also promote much better conditions at our courses and greater strategic interest to Essex County.  We are very excited about the future of these three great courses, using modern technology and science to restore these historic golf courses for the enjoyment of our residents for generations to come and thank you for your patience over the past two years as this work was being completed.
